The All of Us Research Program offers each newly registered researcher $300 in initial cloud credits to support computational work on the Researcher Workbench.
Beginning in early 2025, the program introduced expiration dates for these initial credits. Credits now expire 365 days after a researcher first gains access to the Researcher Workbench.
- Researchers created a workbench account on or before February 18, 2025 had their credits expire on February 17, 2026.
- Researchers who gain access after February 18, 2025 will have credit expiration dates that vary based on when they sign the Data User Code of Conduct.
Researchers can review their specific credit expiration date directly in their Researcher Workbench profile, as noted here.
Credit Expiration or Exhaustion
Once initial credits are fully used or reach their expiration date, users will no longer be able to launch new analysis environments or access existing environments. Additionally, stored cloud resources such as workspace buckets and persistent disks, may be deleted. To avoid data loss and continue conducting analyses, researchers must set up a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) billing account before credits expire or are depleted.
How to update your billing
Researcher Workbench 1.0 Workspaces
Workspace creators can edit billing in the “About” tab of the workspace. To learn more about using a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) billing account to pay for your research, review the “Credits and Billing” section on the User Support Hub.
Researcher Workbench 2.0 Workspaces
In order to change your billing for a workspace in the Researcher Workbench 2.0, you will be required to duplicate the workspace, and add an updated billing pod. To learn more about creating a billing pod, see the ‘Billing and Managing Cost’ in the support article ‘Getting Started in the new Researcher Workbench’
For more information about using initial credits and a billing account to pay for your research, read the “Credits and Billing” section article on the User Support Hub.
