Update to maternal health concepts in CDRv8

  • Updated

On October 31st, 2025, the All of Us Researcher Workbench team released an incremental data change for the Registered and Controlled Tier Curated Data Repository (CDRv8) version 8 to ensure consistency with data privacy protections regarding a selection of maternal health related concepts. This update impacts CDRv8 and includes additions of a selection of EHR sourced concepts related to:

  • Pregnancy - concepts related to pregnancy, pregnancy conditions (like pre-eclampsia), and gestational period. This does not include pregnancy concepts related to delivery.
  • Perinatal - concepts that describe events around a delivery such as birth traumas, fetal diagnosis, postpartum conditions, and miscarriages. This does not include perinatal concepts related to delivery itself.

The update also excludes certain concepts related to pregnancy termination and delivery. For example, concepts that could reveal a child’s date of birth—such as “liveborn infant,” “c-section,” and “vaginal birth” are suppressed. Note, delivery-related concepts may reveal a child’s date of birth, which is considered a publicly reportable event. All publicly reportable events are broadly excluded from the All of Us Registered and Controlled Tier datasets per our privacy methodology.

You can find details on the specific concepts included in this release in the data dictionary here. These changes apply only to CDRv8, while earlier CDR versions (v7, v6, etc.) remain unchanged.

This update prompted a refresh of CDR v8, changing its explicit path from “2024Q3R5” to “2024Q3R8.” As a result, you may need to re-run your queries to align with this change. If your project previously included any removed concepts or could benefit from newly added ones, we recommend reviewing your v8 analysis results to evaluate any potential downstream impacts.

If your analysis was completed using CDRv8 prior to the recent update (2024Q3R5), you may proceed with publication based on those results. However, please be aware that certain data elements have been suppressed and will no longer appear in future CDR versions. Consequently, reproducing your findings may not be feasible. We recommend carefully evaluating these limitations on reproducibility before moving forward.
