Updated July 2026
| The migration deadline has passed (June 30, 2026), and the legacy Researcher Workbench has been decommissioned. Workspaces that were not migrated have been archived and are no longer active for analysis. Archived workspace retrieval will be available later in July 2026. |
Background
The All of Us Research Program’s Data and Research Center is dedicated to improving the ways we provide the All of Us dataset, by expanding the analysis capabilities and user experience in the Researcher Workbench platform.
In Q1 2026, users of the All of Us Researcher Workbench gained access to an enhanced platform— the Researcher Workbench 2.0, powered by Verily Pre. This upgraded version offers a more intuitive interface, advanced tools for data exploration and analysis, and expanded cloud capabilities.
Below are the key milestones of migration process.
As more information becomes available, we will communicate updates and changes with you. News and updates will also be posted on the User Support Hub as relevant.
Beta Launch
Beta phase of the new workbench launched in January 2026, for all registered users of the All of Us Researcher Workbench. During beta launch, both Registered Tier and Controlled Tier v8 CDRs were available in workbench 2.0.
When setting up a new workspace, users chose between the updated Researcher Workbench 2.0 or the original version, Researcher Workbench 1.0. Opting for Researcher Workbench 2.0 allows users to explore its enhanced features, including access to Jupyter Lab, new Data Explorer, and integration with Git repositories. Users will still have the capability to use All of Us initial credits Researcher Workbench 2.0, or create their own billing pod.
The following applications are currently available during the beta launch period (updated as of June 30th, 2026)
- Data Collections
- All of Us CDRv9 Registered Tier Data
- All of Us CDRv9 Controlled Tie Data
- All of Us CDRv8 Registered Tier Data
- All of Us CDRv8 Controlled Tie Data
- All of Us CDRv7 Registered Tier Data
-
All of Us CDRv7 Controlled Tier Data
- Note - Older CDR versions (CDRv6, CDRv5, etc.) will not be available in the Researcher Workbench 2.0.
- Data Explorer Features
- Cohort and Dataset Builders
- Variant Search
- Analysis Applications
- JupyterLab
- JupyterLab Spark Cluster (aka Dataproc Cluster)
- Hail and PLINK tools available
- SAS Studio
- R analysis environment (aka RStudio) with customizable environment configuration (CPU, RAM)
- Expanded cloud environment configurations (standard, high-memory and high-CPU machine types available)
- Two NVIDIA environments - NVIDIA GPU‑accelerated libraries are designed for high‑performance, large‑scale computing environments. Please note: these environments are resource‑intensive and can incur significant computational costs. Be sure to review the associated expenses and confirm appropriate cloud resource allocations before provisioning these environments.
- JupyterLab - NVIDIA NeMo for AI Development (NeMo)
- JupyterLab - NVIDIA Parabricks and CUDA-X Data Science
- Workflows
- UI and command line (CLI) support for Cromwell, Nexflow and dsub
Some applications and features will be limited in Researcher Workbench 2.0. The features listed below will not be accessible at this time, but are scheduled for progressive rollout:
- Data Explorer Features
- Genomics Extraction Tool
- Additional
- Limited Featured Workspaces
- Community Workspaces and Workspace Publishing
Full Launch
The “full launch” of Researcher Workbench 2.0 completed Q2 2026 and included the complete set of all Researcher Workbench features and tools. During the full launch period, all new workspaces we to be created in Researcher Workbench 2.0. Additionally, to ensure seamless access and to take full advantage of the new capabilities, users were able to migrate workspaces from the legacy Workbench to Researcher Workbench 2.0 using a user-interface prompted tool. This archived support article, Migrating Workspaces from Legacy Workbench to Researcher Workbench 2.0, provided a step-wise guide on how to migrate workspaces.
The migration deadline has passed (June 30, 2026), and the legacy Researcher Workbench has been decommissioned. Workspaces that were not migrated have been archived and are no longer active for analysis. Archived workspace retrieval will be available later in July 2026.
Migration Complete - Current State
The Researcher Workbench 2.0 is now the default workbench experience for new and existing users. The legacy workbench, is retired and no longer available. Workspaces that were not manually migrated using the user-interface prompted tool at the end of the full launch period will be archived through a system‑led archival process. Archived workspaces are not active for analysis but may be recovered during the retention period. More information on this process will be provided soon.
