Can I increase the size of my virtual machine (VM)?

  • Updated

Our default machine size is n1-highmem-4 with 4 CPUs and 26 GB RAM. Should you need more compute resources, you have the option to increase the size of your VM within your Workbench account. Please note that increasing the size of your VM will incur additional cost.

Although it is unlikely you will run into memory issues if you take advantage of built-in functions and packages (e.g. data.table or dplyr for R, and pandas for Python) and avoid loops by using vectorization for efficiency, some signs that you may be running out of memory include being unable to write new scripts or trouble with loading existing workspaces.

How to increase the size of your VM

On the right side of your workspace, there will be a sidebar with different icons that, when clicked, will provide you with a “Menu,” “Help Tips,” a link out to the “Data Dictionary,” and an option to “Compute Configuration.” Click the bottom icon “Compute Configuration.”
